We spotted a new restaurant with bright yellow interior design at the Food Court level in Pavilion. Since we were out of dinner ideas, we decided to give it a try.
After flipping through the menu, we noticed that the restaurant’s main dish is Japanese curry rice and they have over 1,400 outlets in the world across Japan, USA, China, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia. In Japan itself, there are more than 1,000 outlets which make it looks more like a fast food chain.
The menu took us some time to understand how to place the order. Here are some tips to help you out in case you have the same trouble:
- Select your main dish to go with the curry. The choices are beef, chicken, seafood or omelette. (There is no pork in the menu).
- Select your portion of rice. Ladies might love the RM3 discount for less rice. It is also suitable for small-eaters or for those on a diet.
- Select your spiciness level of the curry. There is Mild (for children), Original (standard spiciness) and Level 1 to Level 5 ranging from Medium Hot to Crazy Hot.
- Select your volume of curry paste. You can choose to have more curry paste at the price of RM6 per 100 g.
- There is also an option to upgrade your curry rice to Set menu by adding RM4 (Kid's Set which consists of jelly and packet drink), RM6 (Mini Salad + Miso Soup) or RM11 (Mini Salad + Miso Soup + Coffee Jelly).
- You can also add more toppings to your curry. Choices of toppings includes boiled egg, sausages, meat, seafood, vegetables, etc.
We decided to order the typical Chicken Cutlet Omelette Curry Rice and also the Beef Cutlet Curry Rice which we don’t usually see in other Japanese restaurants.
The picture and the actual product were equally attractive. Even though the chicken cutlet looked hard but the moment you take a bite, you can hear the “crunch” sound while being accompanied by its juiciness. Never did we expected that the chicken cutlet was so crispy and juicy. We chose Level 3 (Extra Hot) as the spiciness level which was just perfect. The hot and spicy sensation comes later which did not cover the curry taste.

The beef cutlet was crispy but it was a little hard to chew. The curry tasted good but was slightly salty. The spiciness level that we chose for the Beef Cutlet Curry Rice was Standard (Original Flavor).

For both Curry Rice, we selected Standard rice quantity and Standard curry paste volume. The Standard rice quantity is just nice for an average guy but might be a little extra for a lady. As for the Standard curry paste volume, we felt that it is more than enough as you can see from our photos.
We will certainly come back again to challenge spiciness Level 5 (Crazy Hot) one day. As different people have different spiciness tolerance, we would recommend to try the lower spiciness level before going for Level 5.
Besides that, there were pickles on every table. Both of us finished half of the jar on our table. The pickles are suitable to be eaten with curry as it would help to counter the heavy food taste.
If you do not want to have a heavy meal for your dinner, you can always go for salad. The price is really reasonable and the portion is just nice for one person. Of course, they do serve other types of food like pasta as well but I believe that would defeat the purpose of visiting CoCo ICHIBANYA (just my opinion though).
Generally, we liked their concept whereby each customer have the option to choose the quantity of rice, spiciness of curry paste, etc. In short, you can actually create your very own version of Japanese Curry Rice.
