Omulab @ SS17, Petaling Jaya

While exploring the Petaling Jaya (PJ) area for food recently, we came across Omulab which has a similar concept to the famous Japanese style omurice in Kyoto, Japan. From what we know, the famous omurice in Kyoto is so popular that it is compulsory to make a reservation to visit the restaurant. Since we didn’t have any plan to visit Japan yet, we will just try this Malaysia’s version of omurice first.

A quick glance at the menu put us in dilemma as we couldn’t decide what to order. However, we managed to make our decision and waved for the waiter to come over. Most of the foods on the menu are related to eggs such as fluffy omelette on top of fried rice, yakisoba, salad and Hamburg steak. Since our main objective is to try the omurice, we ordered 2 different plates of omurice as well as a side dish of Chicken Karaage.

Though it is written on the menu that the omurice require about 20 minutes of waiting time, our first order arrived on our table in less than 15 minutes.

Omu Black and White (MYR23.90)

Looking at the soft and fluffy yellowish omelette on top of the black ink squid fried rice, we were filled with excitement waiting to cut it open allowing its contents to flow out slowly just like the famous Kyoto’s omurice video. However, it was far from our expectation as we split the omelette open. The outer layer of the omelette is a little thick and its contents didn’t flow out like how we imagined it would be.

The portion of this black ink squid fried rice is quite large and it also have generous amount of prawns and squids. Paired with the omelette, the fried rice produces a better overall taste. However, towards the end of this plate of fried rice, we felt that it is a bit salty and too creamy. We guessed that the taste was too heavy to our liking after all. The small amount of sliced cabbages may be intended to lighten the taste of the fried rice.

Omu Kare (MYR18.90)

This is the exact copy of the famous omurice in Kyoto, fried rice topped with omelette and served with Japanese curry. Honestly speaking, the omelette is below average with lots of room for improvement. In our opinion, the contents inside the omelette should be more “runny” so that it could flow better the moment it is cut. For our second order, the fried rice is relatively wet and there aren’t many ingredients except for some small chicken pieces. To be honest, we were quite disappointed with this wet fried rice with nothing but some chicken meat at the price of RM18.90.

Karaage (MYR12.90)

Of course, there are options for customer to add toppings such as mentaiko, karaage and others on the fried rice. We didn’t go for that option but chose to order an a la carte of karaage (10 pieces). The karaage is pretty good such that the crispy skin isn’t oily and the meat is tender and juicy. Taking a second bite, we wondered if young gingers are used to marinate the chicken cubes. Perhaps you guys can find out about this for us?

To our surprise, there are many beverages choices at Omulab and some of them are quite unique. Based on the staff recommendation, we ended up ordering a cup of Matcha Sakura Rose Latte at MYR13.

The appearance of the drink is so spring-ish with small slices of rose on top of the Matcha Sakura Latte. This drink didn’t disappoint us at all with the matcha texture remained without losing its original flavor. The sweetness level is just nice with a tiny bit of bitter aftertaste and rose fragrance.

In short, we personally thought that the omurice is just average and 2 plates of them are too much for us due to its creaminess. The sliced cabbages at the side really helped to relieve the greasiness. Sadly to say, the Omu Kare is definitely not worth its price based on the ingredients used to cook it.
