With less than 50 minutes before the start of a movie and out of dining ideas, we came across this restaurant located within the same floor of GSC Mid Valley Megamall. They have the cutest name ever, House of Pok (小猪猪) and this attracted us to give it a try.
Just like any other restaurants, their set meals are more worthy compared to the a la carte menu. We went with the set meals and also some a la carte ones in order to try as much dishes as possible. Even though their specialties are porky dishes, they also serve chickens, vegetables, steamed eggs, mushrooms and tofu.
With time running out (we need to catch a movie soon), we quickly ordered 2 sets of Set A+A (RM14.90 each and comes with 2 choices of Dish A) since we noticed their specialty and recommended dishes are mostly in Dish A. The a la carte price of Dish A is RM7.90 while Dish B is priced at RM4.90 and is mostly vegetables and tofu dishes. Each set meal comes with a side dish and rice/porridge.
In total, we had 4 plates of Dish A which are Trotters with Special Vinegar Sauce, Chef’s Spicy Pork Slice, Hakka Braised Pork with Fungus and Nam Yu Fried Pork.
To be honest, this was our first time ordering trotters with vinegar but surprisingly, the taste is very good with perfect lean meat to fat (might be collagen to some people) ratio of about 70:30. We love the vinegar sauce very much and it is so appetizing to eat with the rice. The spicy pork slices and fried pork are also very yummy though the former tastes better with rice while the latter is good even when eaten on its own. In our opinion, there is further room for improvement when it comes to the Hakka braised pork since we have tasted better versions of this.
On top of that, we also ordered some interesting a la carte dishes since the portion of the set meals isn’t that big. We gave their Braised Lotus Root with Special Sauce, HK Choy Sum with Shanghai Sauce, Salted-Egg Taufu (Dish B items) and Pork Ball Skewer (Dish A) a try.
We had high expectation on the braised lotus root and salted-egg tofu but unfortunately, it was very disappointing. For the tofu, it didn’t taste like salted-egg at all but instead it tasted more like MSG. The sauce of the lotus root isn’t to our liking.
Their pork balls tastes like home cooked fried pork ball and we love it very much. The skewered pork balls are hanged on a bowl of clear soup. It is equally tasty regardless if you eat the pork balls just like that or soak it into the soup. We strongly recommend trying this dish!
The restaurant may consider using better heat resistant bowls for their dishes. This is because we noticed that the waitress couldn’t hold the braised lotus root dish due to its bowl being too hot. In the end, I helped to move the bowl from her tray to our table.
Generally, the restaurant has a good dining atmosphere and not forgetting their amazing interior design with Chinese elements. Food wise, there are a few dishes which we would recommend particularly the trotters with vinegar, fried pork, pork slices and fried pork balls. Also, we believe that they didn’t use MSG in their dishes since we didn’t feel thirsty throughout the movie.
