Keong Kee Herbal Soup 强记补品 @ Jalan Changkat Thambi Dollah, Kuala Lumpur

Keong Kee Herbal Soup (强记补品) has neither a fancy concept nor an air-conditioning dining environment but they definitely have the best Chinese herbal soup in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Besides serving the customers with a bowl of warm tonic soup and the taste of home cooked dishes, they also relive the olden day’s memories of the Kuala Lumpur folks.

Other than being the locals’ favorite, it has also been my favorite as I have been eating here since my primary school days (almost 20 years). Even after so many years, everything is more or less the same (menu, tables and chairs arrangement, etc.). It always felt nostalgic visiting this restaurant and after I introduced this place to Mr. J a few years ago, he is now responsible for bringing me here. *Yeah!*

Whenever we are here, the Coconut Chicken Chinese Herbal Soup and Pork Belly with Preserved Cabbage (also known as Pork Belly with Mui Choy) are something that will always be on our table! Actually, this doesn’t apply to us only as we always noticed other customers ordering these dishes too.

Coconut Chicken Chinese Herbal Soup (MYR12)

The Coconut Chicken Chinese Herbal Soup is their signature soup and it contains a generous amount of Chinese herbs as well as a very big piece of chicken meat. Every spoonful of the soup is clear and sweet with mild herb aftertaste. The sweetness of the soup seems to come from the coconut instead of from the chicken. If you are interested to try this soup, make sure to arrive at the restaurant early because it is usually sold out by 7.30pm regardless whether it is a weekday or a weekend.

Pork Belly with Preserved Cabbage (MYR7.50)

Their Pork Belly with Preserved Cabbage or normally known as Pork Belly with Mui Choy is the best we have ever eaten. Firstly, the pork belly has perfect fats to lean mean ratio with each layer of fats and lean meat being almost the same size. Secondly, the pork belly is well-braised until it is very soft and almost melts in the mouth. There isn't any traces of oily fat taste making it tasty to be eaten by itself or with rice. The “mui choy” isn’t too salty and its original fragrance still remained after cooking. The gravy is also very delicious to the extent that I can just eat it with rice only. It just felt so warm and homely eating this dish! This is something that you absolutely cannot miss if you are here.

Wild Boar Curry (MYR7.50)

Another famous dish here is the Wild Boar Curry but this is our first time trying it as usually 2 bowls of soup, a plate of meat and another plate of vegetables are more than enough for us. The Wild Boar Curry is also very good especially when eaten with rice because of its thick creamy curry and tender meat.

Pseudo Ginseng Soup (MYR7.50)
A bowl of soup for the both of us is never enough and that is why we will always order 2 types of soup. The other soup that we ordered is the Pseudo Ginseng Soup which promotes blood circulation. This soup is good for Mr. J since he is easily bruised whenever he knocked himself. The taste of this soup is a little bitter but it is surely good for health.

To have a balanced meal, how can we skip the vegetables, right? We also ordered a plate of Bok Choy cooked with hot water and mixed with some oyster sauce, soy sauce and fried shallots.

Besides the soups we ordered, there are in fact more than 10 other soups available. Some other soups worth trying are probably the Black Chicken Chinese Herbal Soup or Chicken Chinese Herbal Soup. Well, if you can accept other types of soup which are a little exotic, you can also try their Pigeon Chinese Herbal Soup, Terrapin Chinese Herbal Soup, Turtle Chinese Herbal Soup or Squirrel Chinese Herbal Soup. Keong Kee is the certainly the place to visit for those looking for exotic foods. Nonetheless, if you are not a fan of herbal or exotic soup, you can also go for the normal ones such as the Lotus Root Pork Rib Soup or Old Cucumber Soup.

As a reminder, please visit early if you are interested in trying their Coconut Chicken Chinese Herbal Soup. In our recent visit, we arrived at Keong Kee about 5.30pm and the tables are almost 80% occupied. We didn’t expect so many people at such an early dinner time. No wonder their famous soups are sold out fast. While eating, we also noticed many customers especially the older folks ordering takeaways.
