Shilin Night Market (士林夜市)

After getting down from the MRT station, just follow the crowd and it will lead you to the night market. Shilin Night Market is not just an open area of night market area as it also has a underground food court with many food stalls too.

Look at the crowd! Oops, this was not the night market crowd… it was just the queue for fried chicken!

Situated right at the entrance of the night market, you won’t miss this. If you still can’t find it, just look for the longest queue after getting down from the MRT station. It has a long queue all the time. We thought of getting a second piece of fried chicken when we were about to leave the market around 10.00pm. Surprisingly, there was still a long queue at such timing.

We must say this is the best fried chicken chop that we had during the entire trip! In fact, it might not be considered a fried chicken chop because they actually added one more step by placing the fried chicken chop on the grill before serving to the customers.

As usual, Taiwanese fried chicken chop is not recommended to be cut. We were actually told that the texture would not be nice after cutting into smaller pieces. Hence, we decided to just eat the chicken chop as a big piece. It only cost us TWD70.

The texture of the chicken chop is the best! So juicy and tender! Super delicious! Must try it even if you don’t like fried chicken chop! Haha.

Operating hours:
3.30pm – 12.00am (Sunday - Thursday)
3.15pm – 1.45am (Friday and Saturday)

Second stop, Taiwanese oyster mee sua! The stall is really easy to find as it was just in front of Cixian Temple. This stall mainly captures local people, there were not many tourists.

Good news is that table and chairs were provided. We ordered one small oyster mee sua (TWD30) and tempura (TWD50). The oyster mee sua was really nice and tasty. They were very generous on the ingredients. The tempura was just average for us.

阿亮麵線
Address: No. 84號, Danan Road, Shilin District, Taipei City (台北市士林區大南路)
Operating hours: : 3.30pm – 11.30pm (Sunday - Thursday) , 3.30pm - 12.00am (Friday and Saturday)

Papaya milk at TWD40.

Wow, Hot Star Fried Chicken! It was really famous and there used to have one branch at Pavilion Shopping Mall, Kuala Lumpur. Almost all tourists will try this out.

Unfortunately, the chicken chop (TWD70) was really bad as the chicken was not juicy and tender at all. Besides that, the skin (flour) was extremely thick! We actually threw the skin and just ate the meat only. The quality doesn’t seem to be as good as how others mentioned when they just started.

Hot Star Fried Chicken (士林豪大大雞排)
Address: No. 115, Jihe Road, Shilin District, Taipei City (台北市士林區基河路115號 - 基河路士林夜市新市場旁)

This is rated as one of the must try in Shilin Night Market at only TWD60. Not too sure about others, we felt the taste was just average and the oysters were small and not fresh. We still preferred the one we had in Ningxia Night Market.

Zhong Cheng Hao Oyster Omelette (忠誠號蚵仔煎)
Address: No. 15 - 32, Dadong Road, Shilin District, Taipei City (台北市士林區大東路15-32號)
Operating hours: 3.00pm – 1.00am (Daily)

Before ending our last night market in Taiwan, we tried 2 similar drinks from 2 different stalls. The first drink is called frog laying eggs. A weird name but the taste was not too bad. It was like aiyu jelly drink with pearl (粉圆加爱玉) at TWD35. It was a refreshing drink. We guessed the pearl represents the eggs? They do look alike. Haha.

Fresh milk with bubbles (粉圆加鲜奶) at TWD40.

To conclude, we felt that Shilin Night Market was just a tourist attraction as not every food was delicious. But, it was a good place for getting souvenirs such as magnets and ginger sugar cubes. In fact, the previous night markets that we went to like Ningxia and Raohe have better range of tasty foods at a more reasonable price. You can also see more locals at those night markets. Overall, night market foods are quite repetitive and some even have branches at different night markets. You can check out our previous posts for the unique foods in every night market that we went. Happy travelling everyone.
