a’Roma Dinings @ Taman Paramount, Petaling Jaya

Every single year, without fail, each of us would need to figure out where to dine during our other half’s birthday celebration as well as our anniversary celebration. This year, a’Roma Dinings stood out among the rest in Mr. J’s birthday dining list because of its recent recommendation by food bloggers and hunters in the social media.

Their signature Porchetta further attracted us after we fell in love with the Porchetta that recently ate in Perth’s Jamie Italian’s.

Due to its recent hit in social media, the restaurant has been fully reserved on weekends. We made our reservation 2 weeks in advance to avoid any possible disappointment. We even reserved their signature Porchetta since they only serve a limited portion each day. In order to enjoy the restaurant’s ambiance while it isn’t crowded yet, we arrived slightly earlier than our reservation time.

Upon receiving the menu from the waiter, we took a quick glance of it and decided on what to order in a split second. In fact, we have already gone through the menu from its website the day earlier. Talk about preparing in advance. 😆

Not long after the waiter took our order, they served us their complimentary appetizer - crispy bread with herbs + dipping sauce. The dipping sauce has this Mediterranean element combined with some herbs. Mr. J kind of fancied the appetizer while it wasn’t to my liking.

It has been our habit to order a bowl of mushroom soup whenever we are having western cuisine. We just love mushroom soup so much that we are inclined to try it especially during our first visit to any restaurant. The appearance of a’Roma Dinings’ mushroom soup is nice but its flavor is quite light and it isn't creamy enough. We preferred creamier and thicker mushroom soup with bits of mushroom to chew. As for the crispy garlic bread which accompanied the soup, it was a little oily. We weren’t sure if that is truffle oil or not.

We would actually like to order more appetizers such as the Buffalo Mozzarella, Cold Cuts on Rock Melon or even Baked Snails. To be safe, we decided to only order these extra appetizers if the 2 main meals and dessert that we ordered weren't enough to fill our stomach.

It proved us right even though the portion of the mains looked small but it actually made us very full and satisfied.

The Porchetta is a big piece of meat suitable for meat lovers. The skin is very crispy while the thick piece of meat is very tender and juicy. It is recommended to eat both the skin and meat together (though the skin is very difficult to cut) to enjoy the flavor and taste of this dish. Of course, its meatiness and greasiness might make you easily bloated after a few bites. But, paired with some cooked apples and vegetables which is actually its sides, it seems to wash off the greasy sensation.

The other main dish that we ordered was Spaghettini Alla Carbonara. The portion of this pasta looks small in the plate but it is actually a big enough portion for one person to be extremely full. The highlight of this dish is its yellowish sauce cooked using free range eggs. Carbonara pasta elsewhere usually has the typical white sauce.

The taste is slightly different compared to other carbonara pasta that we have eaten but it is delicious. We also got full quite fast probably due to the ingredients used (cheese, truffle oil, free range eggs, etc.) to cook this normal-looking yet tasty pasta. The other specialty of a’Roma Dinings is their insistence on fresh pasta. Their pastas are freshly made daily thus its texture is really different from those we buy from the supermarkets.

This is the pasta-making machine imported from overseas with different pasta molds. We highly appreciate the restaurant’s effort of producing fresh pasta daily instead of buying the instant ones from the supermarkets. This is the reason why its price is slightly higher than other typical western restaurants.

How can we call it a celebration without a dessert? We ended our celebration with one of our all-time favorites, Tiramisu. Sadly, the dessert was a disappointment to us. The cocoa powder can be tasted from its creamy texture but there doesn’t seem to have any sweetness in it. It is completely tasteless being a cake-type dessert. The 4 tiny scoops of jams which tasted sour yet nice actually help to balance the creaminess of this piece of Tiramisu.

It was unfortunate that we didn’t have enough stomach space for more desserts as we were attracted by the different flavors of cheesecakes displayed near the entrance especially the apple cheesecake (bottom right cake of the below picture). Hopefully, we will have the chance to try them the next time we visit here again.

You may be asking what kind of drinks did we ordered to complement our fantastic main course. It may be surprising but we didn’t order any alcoholic beverage!
