With the Korean wave getting stronger and stronger in Malaysia, there are more and more restaurants from South Korea opening their branches here offering Korean BBQ, Korean Fried Chicken, etc. We totally lost count on the number of new Korean restaurants (which are always crowded) in Klang Valley. We decided to give Outdark a try not just because of their popularity in Busan but also the good reviews given by the locals here.
The moment you step into the restaurant, you will be welcomed by two fences (both left and right) filled with plenty of love locks by the customers. As expected, the restaurant’s decoration is based on its Korean concept but the mid-high table setting with dim lighting and soft Korean music create a romantic and cozy ambience to the customers.
Flipping through their menu, there are lot of foods that caught our attention making us eager to try them all. Unfortunately, the portion of most of the foods is mostly for 2 and more persons. Nevertheless, we still ordered more than what we could eat. You guys might be shocked with our order when you scroll down for the photos later.
We ordered one of their signature dishes and of course the irresistible Korean fried chicken which is also our all-time favorite! We just love Korean fried chicken so much that we have visited quite a number of Korean restaurants in the Klang Valley to satisfy our cravings.
Compared to other restaurants’ fried chicken, the Originate Outdark Chicken (for 2 to 3 pax) comes with some French fries topped with cheese powder. The bite-sized boneless fried chicken is fried to perfection (golden brown on the outside while juicy and tender from the inside)! The batter is light, crisp and well-seasoned with spices. This is definitely one of the best Korean fried chicken in town.
The fried chicken is served with four different Korean dipping sauces (manufactured by Outdark Korea Factory); Korean favorite sweet soy, sweet & spicy, honey garlic, and spicy. We love the honey garlic sauce the most! We will suggest trying the Original Fried flavor (which we ordered) during your first visit. The other flavors to choose from are actually the dipping sauces; Korean favorite sweet soy, sweet & spicy, honey garlic, and spicy. Whichever flavor you chose, the fried chicken will still be served with the 4 dipping sauces.
How can we not try their Cheese Kingdom (for 2 to 3 pax) when it is their signature dish and not forgetting that we are big fans of cheesy food. The Cheese Kingdom is all about cheese, stirred fried chicken with bean paste and toppoki (rice cake) served alongside grilled pineapple slices, mashed potatoes, kimchi (fermented vegetable) and seaweed rice.
When the cheese is about to melt, the staff will come to your table and serve the chicken wrapped with cheese. Ohh, it is so cheesy! We liked the chicken-cheese combination very much. The portion is definitely more suitable for 3 persons instead of 2 persons so that you can try other food as well.
The side dishes are just average and none of them managed to impress us. We didn’t really like the seaweed rice on grilled pan as there is some burnt smell.
Our favorite, Korean Pancake! The appearance is nice but its taste has to be improved in our opinion! The batter and overall quality of the Seafood and Scallion Korean Pancake inclusive of its dipping sauce are not as good as other restaurants. Every piece of pancake gave us a strong flour taste and the texture is really soft without any crisp as if the pancake is just barely cooked. Nevertheless, they are very generous with the amount of scallions and seafood on the pancake.
With so many cheesy and fried food as our dinner, we decided to try one of the popular Korean party drink, Subak Soju, which is also Outdark Special Drink (for 2 to 4 pax). The drink is served in a watermelon containing watermelon juice mixed with Sprite and Soju. It is definitely a refreshing drink with a little alcohol. You will taste a strong watermelon taste followed by Soju aftertaste with every sip of the drink. Personally, we would prefer beer or wine over Soju anytime (it was our first time trying Soju).
The dining experience at Outdark Malaysia is cozy and we love their Originate Outdark Chicken very much! But, the Cheese Kingdom and Korean Pancake are not up to our expectation with its pricing.
