Oslo at a Glance - What to do With Less Than 24 Hours

With a heavy heart, this is our final blog post about Norway. If you have been following our adventures, surely you have been amazed by the magnificent fjords here and also mesmerized by the stunning Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) here.

#Day 6: Tromsø - Oslo, Norway

Next stop – Oslo, the capital of Norway! The cheapest way to get there is by taking the NSB train to Oslo Central Station priced at NOK 93 per way. With approximately 25 minutes of train ride, we arrived at Oslo. Once we were at Oslo, we realized that the city doesn’t felt as safe as the other places in Norway. There are many refugees, beggars and foreigners in the city. At night, we even heard people screaming on the streets. As our accommodation was Comfort Hotel Xpress Central Station just opposite of Oslo Central Station.

Before we went for dinner, we shopped for fish oil capsules at one pharmacy and we were so lucky that the pharmacy was having a promotion for this fish oil brand. Recommended by the locals, the two more popular brands are the green-colored bottles (cheaper) and blue-colored bottle (more expensive).

Yes, Fiskeriet Youngstorget was chosen! As the time was close to 8.00pm, we decided to have a quick dinner nearby.

We ordered the fish & chips and salmon & herring plate for our dinner. Having a meal in a restaurant in Norway could be considered a luxury as a meal can easily cost NOK 170 and above. But, if you cook by yourselves, it would probably cost you NOK 30-35 per meal. Big difference, right? Since this was our last night in Norway before heading back to our homeland, it is absolutely necessary to experience the restaurant atmosphere.

Our foods were served and you know what? We didn’t find the fish & chips being fantastically delicious but we love the salmon & herrings plate. Nevertheless, you can try it out by yourselves but if you have other dinner choices, we would suggest you to go for the others. There are some other foods to try in Oslo such as Food Truck Bonanza, Mathallen Food Hall, Max Burger, etc. You can always try Fiskeriet Youngstorget in Bergen and in Oslo Gardermoen Airport.

Fiskeriet Youngstorget
Address: Youngstorget 2b, 0181 Oslo, Norway
Opening hours: 11.00am - 9.00pm (Monday - Friday); 12.00pm - 9.00pm (Saturdays); 1.00pm – 8.00pm (Sundays)

It was not the end of the day. Grocery shopping is a must before the supermarket closes at 10.00pm. All the supermarkets in Oslo are closed on Sundays. We bought some chocolates and biscuits from the supermarket and the prices are cheaper than the airport.

#Day 7: Oslo, Norway
This was our last day in Norway before flying home. Woke up super early just to make sure we can visit as many places as we can before departing to the airport. It was unfortunate that we couldn’t enter any of the buildings for a better understanding of the history and story as most of the attractions are not open early in the morning. We could just take photos of the buildings’ exterior for memories.

Oslo Cathedral

Stortinget ("Parliament")

Historical Museum

Oslo Royal Palace & The Palace Park

Oslo City Hall

Aker Brygge Wharf

Akershus Fortress

Oslo Opera House

If we have more time, we would definitely visit Vigeland Sculpture Park. It has many sculptures and it seems to be more interesting than the above attractions.

We reluctantly dragged our luggage and body to the airport the same way we got here (NSB train to Oslo Gardermoen Airport). Goodbye to this wonderful country!

We hope our experience could provide you a better understanding of Norway and help you guys in planning your itinerary. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to leave your comment below. We welcome any feedback for our post enhancement. Thanks!
